PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Why is it that in many countries over 50% of first-semester architecture students are female, but the proportion of women among graduates falls below 40%; among full-time architects, only around 20% are women, and in senior positions in larger architecture firms the figure is only around 10%. In order to get to the bottom of this phenomenon, the YesWePlan project was launched by the Austrian Federal Chamber of Architects and Chartered Engineering Consultants together with partners from Germany, France, Spain, Slovenia and France. In the course of the project, background information on the history, traditions and attitudes of women in professions, gender legislation, employment data and examples of best practice for increasing the proportion of women in architecture in all partner countries were collected from all countries.
A questionnaire survey was then carried out with over 900 architects and in-depth interviews were conducted with 100 of them, by means of which life biographies, embedding in social traditions and norms, experiences during studies and in everyday working life and career development were recorded and compared with regard to gender-specific differences. The results were striking and clear: even in academic professions such as architecture and ... male-dominated academic and professional traditions, established networks, prejudices against women in technical professions, family-unfriendly working environments, traditional family structures and other factors still make it very difficult to participate fully, equally and equally paid in the world of work. All project results in detail, the conclusions of the project group and the sustainable activities can be found at www.yesweplan.eu and were published in the YWP!
